In my opinion, these oval butterflyfish are the most beautiful fish on the reef

Dive Journal: Our second dive of the day is at another uncommon spot – this area is usually too surgey to dive but the conditions are good today. There is still a little bit of surge and I might even feel a slight downcurrent in some spots, probably my imagination.

A pair of really curious black jacks (trevallys) circles around us several times, and Don gets some excellent video of them. I didn’t seem to get much.

I continue to spy all sorts of new fishes, including a scissor-tailed fusilier and a chevron butterflyfish dodging around a huge coral head. We also enjoy swarms of more purple queens, assorted anthias, and brushtail tangs in abundance.

A cool bronze sweeper under a ledge, and a spotted trunkfish at the end of the dive.

SUMMARY OF SOME FISHES OBSERVED ON THIS DIVE:

This list was created by looking over the video footage and identifying each species. Mostly, just the new or notable species are listed.

  • Another black jack (trevally)
  • Another yellowspot emperor
  • Black chromis
  • Scissor-tailed fusilier
  • Blue streak fusilier
  • Lined spinecheek
  • Chevron butterflyfish
  • Bronze sweeper
  • Another arc-eye hawkfish
